How are you today, Mr. Rozoff?
Rather distressed by the news of this morning. Or yesterday morning in your case.
Ok, what is your first impression?
It was a brutal, gratuitous slaying of an almost 70-year-old man, killed after being captured. And if the intent of 216 days of NATO bombing was to kill him in the first place, which is clearly the case, with the multiple bombings of his compound in Tripoli, which in one case killed one of his sons and three grandchildren, it is clearly targeted killing and I suppose NATO can now claim success. It has got what it wanted.
President Barack Obama said that there is going to be a pull-out from Libya very soon, so in your mind does that mean the objective has been met?
Yes, it has entirely. Regime change, take-over of Africa’s largest oil reserves, the incorporation of Libya, which hitherto had been the only North African country that was not a member of NATO’s so-called Mediterranean Dialogue, into what is now according to Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen a military partnership with the North Atlantic Alliance… So in every sense their objective has been accomplished. It’s certainly nothing that is going to benefit the Libyan people.
You don’t see this as being justice for the oppressed Libyan people? I mean there are people saying that Gaddafi was a terrible guy. He killed thousands so he deserved to die.
There is just so much – what term do I want to use? – low taste, gratuitous reveling in the murder of this man, who was born 70 years ago in the very city he was murdered in on the 216th day of NATO’s bombing of his country. He was born under Italian Fascist occupation and he died under NATO occupation. I think the parallel there can’t be missed, including the fact that Italy supplied some of the warplanes that have devastated his country since the middle of March, since March 19th. If he was the monster they’ve portrayed him as being – and I invite your listeners to go to the NATO website and see some of the crude caricatures of Gaddafi they’ve posted over the last few days – wall graffiti and so forth – portraying him in a demeaning and belittling way, to further dehumanize him preparatory to murdering him.
Alright, I saw some television coverage of his naked body being thrown around like a piece of meat. I am sorry for the expression.
Yes, after they brought him to Misrata. This is sickening, barbaric and worse than barbaric treatment and it’s in a long line of similar travesties. This is true with Slobodan Milosevic in Yugoslavia and Saddam Hussein in Iraq, with any leader of a country that doesn’t kow-tow entirely. I am not putting all these people in the same basket. Let’s rephrase that. Any leader whose time has come according to the United States and NATO can expect death. Hussein was hanged, Gaddafi was shot. Whereas Gaddafi was considered to be – he was only nominally so, but he was considered to be – the head of state and even the head of the military, and the bombing of his private residences under the guise of their being command and control centers suggests that he was considered by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to be in charge of the Libyan military, when he was captured on Thursday his treatment was governed by the Geneva Conventions, but instead he was shot through the head and murdered. This is the new regime that is being implanted in Libya, and for all the West’s talk of the rule of law and humanitarian concerns and so forth this is a graphic image of its true intentions, just like the death of Slobodan Milosevic in a veritable dungeon in the Netherlands because he was denied proper medical treatment in Russia, and the grotesque hanging of Saddam Hussein. This is the image of the new world order, a world order in all its transparent barbarism.
What do you mean he was denied medical treatment in Russia?
Russia offered to make a deal with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to bring Slobodan Milosevic to Moscow for medical treatment, but he was denied that opportunity and he died shortly thereafter. Even more foul play may have been involved but the message is very clear.
Do you see a pattern, I am sorry to interrupt you there. Do you see a pattern here, I am sure you do, between Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and now Gaddafi? I mean, we have countries, for example, Hussein and Gaddafi, they pretty much stopped their weapons’ programs. They cooperated with the CIA, in this case from what I’ve heard, and it’s pretty much a given, Gaddafi was assisting the war on terror fight by the United States by allowing rendition flights to Libya. He stopped his weapons programs. Do you see a pattern here?
Yes, there’s a very clear pattern. That the United States and the North Atlantic allance use somebody for whatever purpose they want to and then get rid of them and kill them afterwards. Slobodan Milosevic, at political risk to himself inside at that time the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, played a role in negotiating an end to the armed hostilities in Bosnia, in gratitude for which his country was bombed for 78 days in 1999 by the United States and its NATO allies and subsequently he was left to die in prison.
He had a deal with the CIA, I think, it came out, and I think that it’s pretty much a part of the public record that he believed that he was going to be protected.
I don’t know the details about that but at the end of the day what we see is there are a lot of corpses and we see the killings of heads of state. We have to recall that again, even though he was a titular, a nominal, head of state, Muammar Gaddafi was the longest reigning leader in the world. He is was last personal link – since Fidel Castro retired as president of Cuba – between the post-World War II national liberation struggles and the emergence of new nations during the Cold War era and the post-Cold War era that issued in NATO as an international military strike force that can topple governments at will around the world. NATO boasts on its website as of today of flying over 26,000 air missions over a country of six million people, with well over 9,000 of those being combat sorties. So this monster has been unleashed over the last 20 years and Libya will not be the last country so targeted. That you can be assured of.
What do you think is going to happen next?
I don’t know if Libya is able to be put back together again. The Western powers incited regional and tribal differences in order to topple the former Gaddafi government, and believing you can put that genie back in the bottle is overly optimistic – and disingenuous. With the military commander of the National Transitional Council [Abdel Hakim Belhaj] being somebody the United States incarcerated and interrogated as part of its “extraordinary rendition” program and a former fighter in Afghanistan, past leader of the so-called Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, you have al-Qaeda elements and tribal separatists – they’ve created real pandemonium here and now they claim that they want to stabilize Libya. I don’t see it happening. At the end of the day, with the alleged no-fly zone and humanitarian intervention, NATO has transparently waged a war against a government on behalf of insurgents, period. This was clearly the intent from the beginning and now it’s proven successful

Nothing defines the post-Gaddafi National Transitional Council (NTC) regime better than the shockingly brutal manner in which Colonel Moammar Gaddafi was literally beaten to death after his capture on Thursday in Sirte. To reiterate the cliché that all is fair in love and war in this context is no comfort. The reports and footage of Gaddafi’s last moments are nothing short of hair-raising. This was a barbaric act in the extreme. With its usual expedient blinkers where its interests are concerned, the west, whether governments or the media, have tucked away their moral compass somewhere out of sight and convenient. The NTC pro-west regime they are triumphantly supporting is less likely to be, as the Libyan Ambassador in London claimed, a state ruled by law so much as a western imperialist satrap. Given that this treatment of a captured leader was not the first manifestation of the brutality of the NTC fighters (note the violence perpetrated against unarmed migrant African workers captured by the NTC and accused of being Gaddafi mercenaries without any proof), what is the explanation for this barbarism?
The NTC forces include al Qaeda affiliated groups who have been trying to overthrow Gaddafi through armed uprisings (especially in eastern Libya) over the years. Ironically, the very west that claims to be fighting al Qaeda worldwide turned a convenient blind eye to the troubling inclusion of these extremist jihadi groups in the NTC ranks. One faction of these al Qaeda affiliates was held responsible for the murder of a Gaddafi regime senior general who defected to the rebels and was leading their military campaign. Yet to date, no one has been held accountable for this murder. Libya presents the picture of the pattern likely to be used by the west from now on to take out regimes that oppose its imperialist ambitions. The model is to use local dissident or rebellious forces on the ground, supported by the US and Nato’s overwhelming technological superiority in air power, missiles and other ‘remote’ weapons to help crush regimes that do not play ball with the west. US President Obama boasted after Gaddafi’s brutal end was confirmed that not one American life had been lost in the Libyan campaign. What he conveniently forgot to mention was the role of covert special forces attached to the NTC rebels that arguably helped and directed their relatively amateur military efforts. Obama’s triumphalism pulled whatever thin fig leaf was put up by Washington under the rubric ‘leading from behind’.
Like in any detective novel, the two critical questions to be asked are: motive, and beneficiary, to determine the villain of the piece. Libya’s oil and gas riches are what the US-led west has been slavering over for a very long time. Gaddafi’s support to anti-imperialist movements worldwide earned him more than a fair share of the ire of the powers that be in our (still) post-Cold War unipolar world. France and Britain, that led the anti-Gaddafi pack, are licking their lips over the lucrative ingress they have gained through bringing the NTC to power into Libya’s oil and gas. As in Iraq, energy sources and imperialist intervention have a symbiotic relationship.
It may be too close to these horrific events to judge Gaddafi’s place in history. However, a few tentative conclusions can be tendered even now. Colonel Gaddafi’s coup in 1969 that overthrew the decrepit monarchy and established a popular Arab nationalist regime openly declared its support of all anti-imperialist movements in the world. Sometimes, his uncompromising stances and criticism of other third world countries that betrayed their ostensible support to such movements because of ties to, and pressure from, the west, invited retaliation and even relative isolation for Gaddafi. He was however, undeterred for a very long time. It is only when the west was able to orchestrate a virtually total isolation of Libya because of the Lockerbie bombing and other incidents, that Gaddafi attempted to compromise with the west. He gave up his nuclear ambitions, support for already dwindling anti-imperialist movements, and tried to craft an acceptable modus vivendi with the western powers. However, if there is one lesson to be drawn from his fate, it is that empires have long memories and are totally ruthless in achieving their goals. Gaddafi joins a long list of the victims of the rapacious greed and domineering imperialist ambitions of the west that litters the history of the modern world. Rest in peace Colonel. *
Hillary Clinton is the talk of the town on her current sojourn in Islamabad. This time she comes with warnings. Her message is that Pakistan has to decide whether it would help or hinder the US-led war on terror and that the US would continue pursuing the terrorists in the region with or without Pakistan’s engagement. She reiterated the US position in front of Prime Minister Gilani and Chief of the Army Staff General Kayani to remove the safe havens of the terrorists that pose a continuing threat to peace and stability across the border.
Some might think that Pakistan and the US have come to an understanding over the issue of the Haqqani network and that the relations between the two allies are going to come back on track. However, this does not appear to be the case. The Pakistani military leadership seems still adamant. It has not changed its stance on the US demand that Pakistan must stop its support to and launch an operation against the Haqqani network. On the contrary, the military seems well aware of its strategic importance in the war on terror and knows that the US cannot sufficiently sustain anti-al Qaeda/Taliban efforts in Afghanistan without its assistance. Of course the military’s interest in Afghanistan is obvious. It seeks to maintain the policy of strategic depth against any threat from the east.
Amid anti-Pakistan sentiments in the US Congress, the State Department still wants to salvage relations with Pakistan. Mrs Clinton’s visit is part of her government’s efforts to keep pressing Pakistan until it plays the desired role in the war on terror, facilitating the US objectives in Afghanistan before its complete withdrawal in 2014. The US is concerned that the gathering forces of the Taliban in Kunar and Nooristan provinces under the patronage of the Haqqani network would not allow the Kabul government to achieve stability in the post-2014 scenario. Unfortunately, none of the two parties in the latest meeting — Pakistan or the US — has moved an inch from their respective standpoints, frustrating the hope of resolving the impasse between the US and Pakistan. There is even a possibility that the US tone would grow harsher if its soldiers continue to die at the hands of the terrorist Haqqani network.

Ero personalmente presente a Roma, la sera del 30 agosto 2010, alla celebre festa data da Berlusconi alla caserma di Tor di Quinto, in onore di Muhammar Gheddafi, nell’occasione dell’anniversario della firma del trattato di amicizia italo-libica. Ascoltai con viva attenzione il discorso pronunziato dal leader libico dinanzi ad un parterre di tutto riguardo, nel quale si segnalavano alti gerarchi militari, banchieri e capitani d’industria di casa nostra, vistosamente imbarazzati dall’obbligo di sottostare ad un cerimoniale così pomposo allestito per un ospite tanto pittoresco ed ingombrante.
Il giorno successivo alla festa, i nostri mezzi di stampa, con i soliti toni prevenuti verso Gheddafi, dettero conto agli italiani di un “discorso di sfida” lanciato dal colonnello all’indirizzo dell’Italia e dell’Europa, raccontando però soltanto una parte del discorso del leader libico, cioè quella più consona a prestarsi alle campagne conformistiche del nostro giornalismo, tutto intento a gettare discredito sul significato dell’alleanza italo-libica: mi riferisco alla controversa questione del controllo sui flussi immigratori, che effettivamente occupò una parte importante dell’intervento del leader. Gheddafi sul punto usò un linguaggio alquanto duro e franco: “Se ci tenete a conservare il più a lungo possibile la vostra identità etnico-culturale di popoli europei – disse il colonnello – allora dovete fidarvi del mio ruolo di repressore della tratta illegale degli africani; in caso contrario – aggiunse – un’emigrazione incontrollata dei popoli dell’Africa (il continente giovane e prolifico per antonomasia) verso il vecchio continente, unitamente al vostro calo delle nascite, vi farà oggetto di una vera e propria conquista demografica”.
Questa parte del discorso poteva – e può ancora oggi – prestarsi ad interpretazioni controverse, ma quello che i mass-media di destra e di sinistra omisero totalmente di raccontare all’opinione pubblica riguardò due parti ben diverse del discorso di Gheddafi: e fu ascoltando quelle parti del discorso che mi resi conto che era stato davvero un miracolo, per il capo di una nazione del Terzo Mondo come lui, l’essere riuscito a sopravvivere per più di 40 anni ai vertici della sua nazione senza essere fatto fuori dalle potenze che governano il globo (anche se ormai sappiamo bene come andò l’incidente di Ustica nel 1980 e sospettiamo a buona ragione che Bettino Craxi potrebbe avere pagato a caro prezzo la impavida idea di avvisare il colonnello nell’imminenza del bombardamento reaganiano della sua residenza, nel 1986).
Il colonnello si rivolse agli astanti mettendo due volte il coltello nella piaga: in primo luogo, alluse al periodo fascista, alla brutale repressione delle tribù libiche messa in atto dal maresciallo Graziani (il quale, com’è noto, fece uso di gas tossici per sterminare i libici), parlò dei campi di concentramento creati da noi italiani negli anni ’30 del novecento, esaltò la figura dell’eroe Omar al-Mukhtar, il celebre “Leone del deserto” immortalato nel pluri-censurato film del 1981 con la grande interpretazione di Anthony Quinn.

Senza mezzi termini, il colonnello Gheddafi quella sera, dinanzi a fior di militari nostrani con tanto di stellette, ferì l’orgoglio di noi italiani, esortandoci a chiedere loro “scusa” per quello che i nostri padri-nonni avevano compiuto nella loro terra. Ricordo perfettamente le sue parole: “Dovete fare conoscere ai vostri figli – infierì nelle nostre coscienze sporche – i crimini commessi da voi italiani nel periodo del colonialismo in Libia, così come io quest’oggi ho mostrato al vostro Presidente Berlusconi, che ringrazio per l’attenzione dimostratami, le foto dei campi di concentramento da voi stessi costruiti nel mio Paese”.
A chiusura dell’intervento, il colonnello fece una riflessione prettamente geopolitica che a mio avviso costituì il punto più importante del suo discorso, senz’altro quello che fece andare in bestia gli osservatori britannici e statunitensi presenti in giacca e cravatta, sempre “vigili” e pronti ad intervenire ogniqualvolta in Italia qualcuno mostra di far sul serio in politica estera, distaccandosi dal loro padronato.
“Mi rivolgo a voi italiani ed a tutti i popoli che si affacciano sulle coste del Mediterraneo – esclamò il colonnello – E’ giunta l’ora che il Mediterraneo torni ad essere mare nostrum, nel senso che deve appartenere unicamente a quelle nazioni posizionate sulle sue rive. Non possiamo più consentire che potenze lontane geograficamente debbano conservare la loro supremazia militare e marittima sul nostro mare. Dobbiamo, prima o poi, iniziare a liberarcene perché ormai i tempi sono maturi per una svolta strategica”.
Ma guarda un po’ – pensai tra me e me – un leader di un Paese in via di sviluppo trova la forza e l’ardimento di venire in un Paese ex potenza coloniale non soltanto per rivendicare, al cospetto delle sue massime cariche, l’esigenza sacrosanta di una richiesta di scuse per le note responsabilità storiche ma perfino per esortare la medesima ex potenza coloniale (cioè la misera Italietta di questi anni) a trovare il coraggio di affrancarsi finalmente dal giogo soverchiante delle nazioni vincitrici del secondo conflitto mondiale, in primis Gran Bretagna e U.S.A.
A ripensarci adesso, dopo un anno e 2 mesi in cui è successo proprio di tutto, il discorso di quella sera di fine estate fu davvero una lezione di dignità per noi italiani, anche se probabilmente nemmeno Gheddafi era consapevole del livello di appiattimento valoriale se non di inebetimento collettivo della nostra comunità nazionale, ormai incapace anche soltanto di pensarsi libera e autonoma da quei centri di potere che, in nome dell’esportazione della democrazia, seminano guerre, crisi economiche e depressioni sociali da un capo all’altro del pianeta. Forse ci aveva sopravvalutato – il colonnello Gheddafi – quando aveva pensato che, dopo l’infamia del colonialismo novecentesco, non saremmo stati capaci di violare ancora una volta il suolo e il diritto all’autodeterminazione del popolo libico.
Noialtri, poi, cosa abbiamo davvero capito della guerra di Libia del 2011? Noi cittadini ingannati da una classe politica di così infimo livello degna davvero di una Repubblica delle banane; noi impoveriti nelle tasche e surclassati nell’animo da un ceto dirigente che, tranne pochissime eccezioni, è totalmente vassallo di quegli stessi centri di potere finanziario di matrice anglosassone che, proprio in questi ultimi tempi, stanno portando a termine il noto programma del New World Order, che passa inevitabilmente per un azzeramento della sovranità nazionali, sia in politica che in economia; noi telebeoti, umiliati e gabbati da un ceto giornalistico che in quest’epoca di menzogne ha conservato un livello di dignità e deontologia professionale inferiore al mestiere di prostituta (senza offesa per le prostitute)!
Ebbene, mentre noi dormivamo, e ancora dormiamo su 7 cuscini, il colonnello Gheddafi aveva ben compreso i disegni dei gruppi oligarchici che dominano l’Europa e – forse ancora per poco – il mondo. Aveva sfidato i piani di dominio coloniale dell’Africa, in cui si distingue una Francia mai tanto famelica dai tempi di Napoleone, lavorando per progetti di integrazione continentale (mutuati dal modello latino-americano): Fondo Monetario Africano, una nuova moneta-dinaro sganciata dal dollaro, un satellite pan-africano. Aveva individuato proprio nella anacronistica NATO (sorta nel 1949 per contrastare, si immagini, il fantasma comunista!) e nella sua pesante presenza nel Mediterraneo, la chiave del dominio anglo-americano sul continente europeo e sui Paesi del nord-Africa. E infatti, i più informati sanno bene che alla NATO, dopo la devastazione della ex Jugoslavia e l’annientamento del popolo serbo, mancavano ancora due soli tasselli nazionali per poter dire completato il mosaico dell’alleanza atlantica nel Mediterraneo: guarda caso, proprio la Libia dell’indomito Gheddafi e la Siria del filo-russo e filo-iraniano Assad.
In tanti per fortuna hanno cominciato ad aprire gli occhi su questa ennesima carneficina “umanitaria” congegnata dall’Alleanza Atlantica, che lascerà pesanti macerie nel già traballante sistema di diritto internazionale; altri – forse – capiranno a distanza di qualche tempo cosa è davvero successo a poche centinaia di chilometri in linea d’aria da noi.
Ma al momento della sua (presunta) morte, occorre rendere onore alle doti di intrepido coraggio e di non comune fierezza del colonnello Gheddafi: ha combattuto fino alla fine, senza alcuna paura degli aggressori, incarnando il desiderio di autodeterminazione e di lotta al colonialismo per il quale sarà ricordato per generazioni da milioni di africani e, assieme a loro, da tutti i popoli sottomessi ai padroni del mondo.
Dalla relativa conoscenza che posso avere io della situazione sul campo, credo davvero difficile che i libici, ancorchè privati della loro guida, possano essere totalmente sottomessi dall’imperialismo: continueranno a combattere e, alla fine, i colonialisti dovranno tornarsene ancora una volta a casa.

Le battaglie contro le ultime roccaforti dei lealisti libici sembrano rivelarsi più dure del previsto per i ribelli che, nonostante le forze schierate intorno a Bani Walid e Sirte, subiscono i contrattacchi delle truppe fedeli a Gheddafi. Ancora una volta la pochezza militare degli insorti viene rinforzata in modo decisivo dai jet e dagli elicotteri della Nato, soprattutto francesi e britannici, che stanno martellando da diversi giorni le postazioni lealiste nelle due città.
Questi raid hanno permesso alle brigate del Consiglio Nazionale di Transizione di penetrare nell’abitato di Bani Walid per poi ritirarsi precipitosamente per “consentire alle forze della Nato di bombardare le postazioni dei miliziani del rais” come ha riferito la televisione dei ribelli Libia Libera. Sabato il centro della città (100 mila abitanti) è stato scosso da diverse forti esplosioni e se i ribelli si sono ritirati per non rischiare di essere colpiti da bombe e missili degli aerei significa che l’attacco è stato massiccio e condotto con armi ad alto potenziale.
Nei raid contro gli ultimi bastioni lealisti, la Nato però dovrebbe gettare la maschera d’ipocrisia con la quale ha coperto le oltre 22 mila missioni condotte da fine marzo delle quali quasi 8.500 d’attacco. L’intervento internazionale in Libia è stato infatti giustificato con la necessità di “proteggere i civili”, come specifica la Risoluzione 1973 delle Nazioni Unite, ovviamente dagli uomini di Gheddafi accusati di reprimere la rivolta (armata) scoppiata in Cirenaica.
Giustificazione traballante che non ha mai convinto neanche i più ingenui (neppure quando il comando Nato ha battezzato i raid Operazione Unified Protector) ma che poteva avere una qualche legittimità quando l’artiglieria di Gheddafi colpiva città che si erano ribellate come Misurata, Zlitan, Zawya. Ora però la situazione si è rovesciata: la popolazione di Sirte e Bani Walid non si è ribellata al Colonnello e appartiene a clan e tribù fedeli al regime e rivali di quelle che guidano il Cnt.
La missione della Nato, che impone di “proteggere i civili”, dovrebbe quindi colpire le forze dei ribelli che assediano le città e non gli assediati che hanno subito negli ultimi giorni oltre 50 raid da attacco al giorno. Pare quindi evidente che in Libia ci sono cittadini di serie A e B. I primi sono contro Gheddafi e possono contare sui raid “protettivi” della Nato, i secondi sono filo-Gheddafi ma le bombe dei nostri jet li aiuteranno a cambiare idea.
Mosca accusa l’Alleanza Atlantica di aver forzato la risoluzione dell’Onu ma a Bruxelles non hanno esitato a ribadire che la “Nato è pronta, se sarà necessario, ad estendere la durata della missione in Libia oltre la scadenza del 26 settembre” come ha riferito una fonte militare qualificata. Ridicola e bugiarda la motivazione di estendere la missione “fino a quando esisterà una minaccia contro la popolazione civile” poiché “ci sono aree in cui le forze del regime continuano ad attaccare”. In realtà a Sirte e a Bani Walid le forze lealiste sono sulla difensiva e in ogni caso colpiscono le milizie ribelli non certo i civili che, almeno in quelle zona, stanno dalla loro parte.
